Day 3 (Out of Sydney Day)

Well, we hoped on a bus at 7:30am on Saturday morning to start our "Out of Sydney Day" full of sandboarding and dolphin watching. However, no one told us that the bus ride would be 3 hours...one way! We drove north of Sydney and stopped after an hour and a half to have some morning tea (this Was a former British penal colony after all, and tea times are strictly observed). Neither Tina nor I are big (hot) tea drinkers, but it was a fun experience anyway. After morning tea, we got back on the bus and headed through Newcastle (which is on the coast) to a place called Birubi Point Beach. Once we got there we jumped in some four-wheel drive jeeps and they took us about a half a mile up to the sand dunes to do some sandsurfing. It's hard to tell by the pictures, but the dunes are about 100 feet high and very steep. The boards we used kind of looked like longer skateboards with a small board on top where you can rest your feet. You have to put your arms behind you as you surf to steer (and more importantly, to brake). I'm hoping to post a little video of us surfing in the next post. Surfing was the easy part, walking back up the sandy hill to do it again was not. After a few runs you were pretty much exhausted (from climbing the hill). But we had a blast. Besides it being a bit overcast, it was a great experience!

Pictures hardly do it justice, but the dunes are about 100 feet high and you can fly down the dunes.
